Academics in African American Studies
The African American Studies program offers a minor in African American Studies.
The minor seeks to bring an interdisciplinary approach to promoting creative scholarship and research. Coursework examines the cultural, historical, economic, and political dimensions and experiences of people of African descent in America, the Caribbean and Africa; and enables students to develop critical and analytical approaches to contemporary issues.
With a minor in African American Studies, students can:
- Learn the history of people of African descent in Africa, the United States, the Caribbean, and in the diaspora.
- Learn what Africans and African Americans have contributed to world culture in the areas of the sciences, art, literature, medicine, music, technology, etc.
- Learn how the erasure or neglect of these contributions have shaped what we know and do not know about ourselves and others, power relations, and public policies.
- Learn new constructive ways of thinking about race, culture, and representation.
- Learn to appreciate cultural diversity and to incorporate positive attitudes toward racial and ethnic differences in the workplace and in other areas of human relations.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of internship opportunities to further enhance their educations.
